U2’s Adam Clayton has split from his fiancee Suzanne Smith. Friends of the 46-year-old bassist say they parted a few weeks after Christmas.
The couple, who have been going out for the past ten years, are said to remain on good terms.
But it has come as a shock to Clayton’s friends.
The couple only got engaged last year in London on Valentine’s Day. Canadian-born Smith, who used to work as U2 manager Paul McGuiness’ personal assistant, lived with Clayton at his €4m Georgian mansion in Rathfarnham.
But she is now believed to have moved out and is living in London, where she works as a record industry executive.
Reasons for the split are not known. This is the second time Clayton has split from a fiancee. His first was temperamental supermodel Naomi Campbell, to whom he got engaged in May 1993 two months after meeting.
Campbell ended their relationship in April 1994 but remains on good terms with him.
In a recent magazine interview, she referred to him as ‘a wonderful friend’. Clayton was unavailable for comment last night but a friend of the star said: ‘There is nobody else involved, and they have just decided that – for now at least – it would be better if they led their lives apart.’
